A Message from Kathleen Plinske, Executive Vice President and Provost
I hope that this message finds you well. Today, I write with several updates related to supporting our students interested in taking classes at Valencia this fall.
August Opportunity for Full- and Part-time Faculty
As we learned during our calling campaign in the spring, our students respond well to personalized outreach. We’re planning to do additional outreach in preparation for the fall term, and we’re looking for full- and part-time faculty to serve as “Enrollment Coaches” during the month of August.
Through telephone and email outreach to students who have not completed their fall registration, Enrollment Coaches will provide connection, direction and support to ensure students have the information and resources needed to finalize their fall plans. Enrollment Coaches will receive training and will be coordinated by and receive support from our Student Affairs team.
- When will the Enrollment Coach temporary assignment occur? Enrollment Coaches will receive training the week of July 27, and will begin their outreach to students the week of August 3. The assignment will conclude no later than Friday, August 21, 2020.
- What is the time commitment? Enrollment Coaches are expected to complete the required training and engage in outreach to students for approximately 60 hours for the duration of the project. Enrollment Coaches can complete their assignment before August 21 if desired, though the expected total time commitment remains the same.
- What are Enrollment Coaches paid? Enrollment Coaches will be paid a stipend of $1,000 at the successful conclusion of the project.
- How many Enrollment Coaches will be selected? A team of Academic and Student Affairs leaders will select between 30 and 50 coaches, based on submissions of interest.
If you’re interested in serving as an Enrollment Coach, please complete this brief questionnaire by this Sunday, July 26, 2020.
Opportunity for Students with R20 from Spring
For students who elected the R20 option for a course in the spring and who did not retake the course this summer, we are extending the opportunity to retake the course at no additional cost this fall. Students who have R20 grades from spring who did not elect to retake the course this summer will be contacted by email and by phone (by our new faculty Enrollment Coaches) to make them aware of this opportunity.
Tuition Installment Plan
We are working to ensure a Tuition Installment Plan (TIP) will be available for students for the fall term and anticipate having details by next week. Students who have used the TIP in the past will receive an email from Valencia when it becomes available. More information can be found on the TIP website (it will be updated as soon as details for the Fall 2020 term are available).
Laptops for Student Use
We will continue to loan laptops at no cost to students enrolled in classes this fall. Students should visit http://www.valenciacollege.edu/laptop to request a laptop.
Thanks to those of you who expressed concern about the guidance that would have required international students to take face-to-face classes this fall. While we had developed a plan for supporting our international students under this guidance, I am pleased to report that the guidance has been rescinded. Our international students may take their entire course load online this fall.
Virtual Answer and Advising Center
As you might imagine, the email inboxes of our colleagues in Student Affairs are overflowing. Please invite students to visit our Virtual Answer Center or Virtual Advising Center for real-time assistance, including during the evenings and on weekends.
Academic Assembly 2020
We’re working to finalize the plans for this year’s Academic Assembly, which will be virtual. Please mark your calendars for Thursday, August 20, 2020, and be on the lookout for more specific details in next week’s edition of The Juice.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments or concerns.
Please take good care.
