PTK Joins Fleet Farming to Help Parramore

A Message from Stacey Johnson, President, East and Winter Park Campuses

On Friday, November 9, 2018, the East Campus Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Club participated in a community work day at Fleet Farming’s South Street Garden property in Parramore.

Owned by the City of Orlando, the property is a .25-acre plot currently classified as a low-income food desert, a place where fresh food accessibility is limited. PTK members, who chose sustainability as the theme for the 2018-19 academic year, supported the farm by weeding, mulching and planting fruit trees, edible shrubs and ground cover plants.

Fleet Farming is a nonprofit urban agriculture program with a mission to empower all generations to grow food to increase local food accessibility. The organization accomplishes this by converting underutilized lawn space into productive localized edible gardens or micro farms. Fleet Farming’s program works to provide edible landscaping to schools, community centers, affordable housing units, businesses and individuals through its community farming initiative and edible landscapes garden installation service.
