Richard Sansone Uses Endowed Chair to Build Relationships in Brazil

With the help of a 2011/12 Endowed Chair in Learning Leadership, Richard Sansone, professor of Portuguese and English for academic purposes (EAP), traveled to Brazil to conduct a site study in hopes of launching a future summer study abroad program for his students there.

Richard visited four universities where he met with faculty, staff and students to gather information and assess which would make the best partner for Valencia. From these site visits, Richard was most impressed with one university in particular – The Universidade Federal Dos Vales Do Jequitinhonha E Mucuri. A name that he says “is somewhat of a tongue twister.”

“I am very hopeful that we will be able to build on the wonderful, initial visit to develop a relationship,” Richard said. “I was very positively impressed, not only by the wonderfully warm reception that I received from the international programs office… but also by the rich cultural, historical wealth that [the city] has to offer the visitor.”

Professor Sansone is a big jewel in the Valencia crown. I believe he used this endowed chair very well to benefit Valencia's students. I wish *I* could go to that wonderful Brazilian town to study Portuguese like some lucky Valencia students will some day (if the partnership develops, which I think it certainly should).
