Maryke Lee, dean of mathematics at East Campus, was one of the two reappointments made by Governor Rick Scott for a second four-year term as secretary and chair of the governance committee for the 16 member West Orange Healthcare District (WOHD) board of trustees on July 15, 2013.

The WOHD is a special district of the State of Florida that was created over 50 years ago to improve healthcare access and services for residents of West Orange County.

According the West Orange District website, the District Board decided to fully integrate with a larger healthcare system for the benefit of the residents it serves, and in March 2012 WOHD sold all of the District facilities, operations and assets to Orlando Health.

A recent project of the WOHD is the implementation and construction of “Learning Gardens” for six schools in the Winter Garden area. The premise of this program is to teach children the process of growing fruits and vegetables and to foster good health and nutrition.

Dr. Lee shares that she is proud of the accomplishments of the West Orange Healthcare District and is looking forward to her second term as a trustee.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Lee for her contribution to the West Orange County community!

Shara Lee, assistant director for Faculty and Instructional Development at the Winter Park Campus, has been selected to receive the Outstanding Experiential Education Research Award for 2013, which is awarded by the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE). This award is in recognition of her dissertation work titled, “Academic Engagement through Experiential Learning: Building Transferable Skills within Undergraduate Hospitality Education.”

Nominator Molly Hayes Sauder, an assistant professor at York College of Pennsylvania, wrote in her nomination submission:

[Dr. Lee’s] dissertation contributes significantly to the field of experiential learning. She studied the impact of learning styles in an experiential learning context, and explored both student perceptions of learning and direct measurements of learning from site supervisors. Her work is innovative and especially critical given the current assessment/accountability climate of higher education.

The award will be presented during the 2013 NSEE Conference, to be held in St. Petersburg Beach, FL, on Tuesday, October 1, at the Loews Don Cesar Hotel.

Please join us in congratulating Shara on this prestigious achievement!
