Ralph Clemente Thanked During the Emmy Awards

ralph-clemente-tweet-groveDavid Nutter, director of “Game of Thrones,” honored our own late Ralph Clemente, former film department chair and professor of film production technology, during his acceptance speech for best director at the 67th Annual Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 20, 2015.

Ralph, who passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2015, is remembered for his legendary and passionate work in film and his inspiration to Valencia students. David was a student of Ralph’s at the University of Miami.

Employees Rank in the Valencia College Run/Walk for Heroes

Thank you to all employees who participated in the Valencia College Run/Walk for Heroes on the Osceola Campus on Friday, September 11, 2015. More than 180 walkers and runners joined the cause to raise money for the Rotary Club of Lake Nona’s September 11 Memorial Fund to support Valencia scholarships for emergency responders at the Osceola Campus. Proceeds from this year’s race will bring the scholarship over the $25,000 needed to endow the scholarship. Funds will be available after one year to award to students.

Overall, 13 teams joined, including the following from Valencia: East Campus, Lake Nona Campus, Organizational Development and Human Resources, Osceola Campus, School of Public Safety, Valencia Veterans, West Campus and Winter Park Campus. The winners of the Largest Team Spirit Award were Starwood in first place and the Osceola Clerk of Court in second.

Congratulations to Marc Moseley, systems administrator, for being the Male Masters Winner and the following employees who placed first, second or third in their age division:

Valencia’s “Phoenix Magazine” a Finalist in Associated Collegiate Press Lit Mag Competition

Congratulations are in order for the advisors and staff of Valencia College’s West Campus Phoenix Magazine. The publication was named a finalist by Associated Collegiate Press for “Magazine Pacemaker” for two-year colleges on Thursday, September 3, 2015. Judges select “Pacemakers” on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics. The competition has been considered by many to be student journalism’s highest honor.

Winners will be announced at the Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Association National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas, during its conference held Wednesday, October 28 – Sunday, November 1, 2015. Valencia is one of three finalists competing in the two-year college competition.

Student editors earn elective credit while working on the magazine, and layout and design is done by graphic design students. Phoenix Magazine advisors are Jackie Zuromski, professor of English, and Meg Curtiss, professor of graphic design.

Valencia Chapter of Florida Engineering Society Wins Statewide Awards — Again

fes-award-group-groveFlorida Engineering Society (FES) Valencia College Chapter members Andara McGill, Jontavius Jacobs, Sean Brooks, Stephen Greene, Tyler Coleman, Emanuel Montanez and Steffen Camarato with Advisor Charles Davis accept Delta Award for “Most Active Student Chapter” among two-year engineering programs for the third consecutive year.

At this year’s Florida Engineering Society/Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers 99th Annual Summer Conference and Exposition, held Wednesday, July 29 – Saturday, August 1, 2015, at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort and Spa in Fort Lauderdale, the Valencia College chapter of the Florida Engineering Society (FES) and its advisor received two prestigious awards.

Charles Davis, coordinator, career program advisor and advisor to the chapter, was named the Engineering Faculty Member of the Year. This marked the second consecutive year that Charles was distinguished with such an honor.

The FES board recognized Charles for his impressive diligence in advising the FES Valencia College Chapter as well as his continued efforts to educate future engineers in the areas of applied engineering as it relates to math, technical design, quality assurance, ethics, communications and management. He was also acknowledged for his unparalleled commitment to both his students and his peers by serving on various boards and was initiated into the Order of the Engineers, and is starting his helm as chair of the Florida Professional Engineers in Industry (FPEI).

When asked about receiving the Engineering Faculty Member of the Year award, he humbly stated, “I’m honored to receive this award and be recognized by my peers and students for giving back to the Engineering Society, both academically and professionally.”

In addition, the second award that was given to the FES Valencia College Chapter was Most Active Student Chapter among two-year engineering programs. This is the third consecutive year the chapter has won such an award.

It was noted by the FES Board that the Valencia College Chapter made notable strides in increased membership, event execution and promotion of advocacy of FES among its students. By receiving this award, the chapter has prompted the rest of the state of Florida to acknowledge and focus its attention on the chapter’s high-standard of work, willingness to perform civic duties and continuous strides for excellence.

FES Valencia College Chapter President Sean Brooks, accepted the award on the College’s behalf. “It was a great honor to be a part of this year’s FES/FICE Summer Conference and an even bigger honor to receive the Delta Award for Most Active Two-Year College. We have done great things over the past few years, and this year we have bigger and better things planned. Our membership within our Valencia College chapter is a very involved group, and we hope to achieve our goals throughout this upcoming 2015 – 2016 year.”

Charles and the FES Valencia College Chapter expect to keep raising the bar.

Emanuel “Manny” Montanez is currently enrolled in Valencia College’s bachelor’s degree program where he is majoring in electrical and computer engineering technology (B.S.E.C.E.T.) with a concentration in electrical/electronic systems. Manny is the vice president of the Florida Engineering Society, serves as the communication director of public relations with IEEE and is employed as a Valencia Volunteer within the Department of Student Development, West Campus.

Campus Security Celebrates Exemplary Employee Performance

A message from Stacey Johnson, President, East & Winter Park Campuses

The Valencia College Security department is a role model for promoting employee morale and performance.

Over the past year and a half, several members of the East Campus Security team have been recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty by displaying outstanding teamwork, positive attitude and willingness to help others.

“The Employee of the Quarter award is a great way to recognize our employees for a job well done and to publicly recognize their performance,” said East Campus, Security Manager Tom Decker. “When an employee goes above and beyond, sometimes a simple ‘thank you’ does not feel like it’s enough.”
