SGA Discusses Hot Topics Like the Open Carry Bill with Senators and Representatives During Tallahassee Trip
ShareOn Tuesday, February 2 and Wednesday, February 3, 2016, Valencia College’s Student Government Association (SGA) from each campus joined together for a leadership trip to Tallahassee, where they visited the Capitol Building.
Students not only had the opportunity to tour the buildings, but they also met with senators and representatives to discuss issues and bills that play an important role in the lives as students, including the open carry bill and the Poinciana Campus. Students also had the opportunity to sit in on a gun act bill debate. Sen. Darren Soto joined them for dinner to continue the discussions and even posed in some students’ selfies.
SGA members also met Sen. Andy Gardiner, president of the Florida Senate, and spent time in the Senate chamber, learning about the history of the Florida Senate.
“This was an amazing experience that allowed us to see inside the life of an elected official,” shared Emmy Torres, Osceola Campus student, SGA vice president and staff assistant II. “I am truly grateful for the time they all took to speak to us and show us that although it takes hard work and much sacrifice to make this country as great as it is, the results and privileges to be able to have a voice in it all is priceless.”
“It is an honor for Dr. Mullowney [vice president, policy/general council] and I to work with our Student Government Leaders,” said Jay Galbraith, vice president, public affairs and marketing. “They are fantastic representatives of the students and our College. Their experience in Tallahassee will serve them well in their future careers.”

I remember fondly my visit to Tallahassee as a member of SGA when enrolled at Valencia Community College. What a wonderful tradition to continue for our future leaders.
