Students Showcase Their Undergraduate Research at Inaugural Symposium

As part of the proposal that was approved during the Learning Leadership Council last May, more than 65 faculty, students and community members gathered for the First Annual Valencia College Undergraduate Research Poster Showcase on Friday, April 21, 2017. The showcase followed the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Bridges-to-Baccalaureate scholars end-of-semester presentations and award ceremony at the West Campus Special Events Center.

The showcase was open to all students. Ultimately, 29 students presented 22 posters on topics ranging from biotechnology to interdisciplinary honors work.

Judges assessed the posters based upon poster design, verbal presentation and quality of research. Of those who entered, three awards were given.

  • First place: Angela Stinson, Development of an Android Application for Dolphin Research (mentored by Marie Trone, professor, biology)
  • Second place (tie): Karen Sanchez, 3D Printing: Prosthetic Hand (LSAMP); Gunika Datt, A Putative Vaccine Candidate for the Zika Virus (mentored by Rita Luther and Dheeraj Verma, professors, biology)
  • Third place: Angie Sanchez, PCR Amplification of the Lycopene Epsilon Cyclase Gene in Tomato (mentored by Rick Dexter, professor, biology)

For many students, this showcase served as an opportunity to practice presentation skills for future regional and national conferences.

A special thank you goes to the panel of judges, which included Bruce Carlson, Valencia District Board of Trustees vice chair; Tom Franklin Sr. from KPM Franklin; Mike Sweeney from Toho Water Authority; Colleen Smith from the College of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Central Florida; Anitza San Miguel, dean, science; Anna Saintil, professor, student life skills; Greg Scible, professor, mathematics; Adriene Tribble, professor, humanities, and Flora Chisholm and Sue Skambis, professors, biology.
