Supervisor Reflections: The Leadership Academy

By Grace Acevedo, Assistant Director of Transition Services

The Leadership Academy has, so far, been an amazing learning experience. Not only are the two facilitators, Amy Love, a career program advisor, and Fontella Jones, an academic advisor, great, but the external speakers that have been introduced thus far have been very knowledgeable and enjoyable as well.

During our first workshop we engaged in team-building activities with Brian Jackson (an external consultant who designs and facilitates experience-based organizational performance programs for corporate clients and government entities). Brian had us focus on individual leadership, teamwork and communication skills, and through these exercises, I discovered that I would “check myself out” of a situation when not completely invested. This lesson helped me become more self-aware, and I learned alternative ways of responding to situations, which will increase my effectiveness in a team setting.

During the second workshop, we had the opportunity to learn about coaching with Mark Freeman (an external business coach who focuses on staff engagement). Learning the differences between mentoring and coaching helped me better understand my role with fellow colleagues and as an advisor for the Latin American Student Organization. In addition, I am sharing a trust-building team activity that I will be implementing during my next team meeting. I am entirely grateful to be chosen as part of this great learning opportunity; the tools I will continue to acquire will help me grow within my current position and will be of great use for my professional future.
