TEDx Event: Valencia College Women Draws Faculty, Staff and Students to Winter Park Campus to Share Ideas

The Winter Park Campus hosted its first TEDxValenciaCollegeWomen experience on Thursday, December 5, 2013, an international, live-stream event, which drew more than 50 students, faculty and staff.

The TEDWomen 2013 event, which was hosted live in San Francisco, was shared with Valencia and more than 200 other organizations around the world through live-stream video.

Notable women presented how women and girls are shaping the future. Featured speakers included  Diana Nyad, who swam 110 miles from Cuba to Florida at age 64; Krista Donaldson, chief executive officer of D-Rev, a nonprofit company improving the health and incomes of people living on less than $4 a day; and Maya Penn, a 13-year-old who makes eco-friendly clothes and accessories sold on a website she built, where a percentage of sales goes to charities and environmental organizations.

As part of the conference, local TEDxWomen events around the world celebrated innovative people in their own communities. For example, the Valencia event was based on four Gs: Giving, Global, Green and Gadgets, and featured displays on green gadgets, Google glass, augmented reality posters and 3D printers. The event also featured Skype conversations with students in the Netherlands and stations to send holiday mail to women in the military.

Another TEDx event will be held this spring. Check upcoming issues of The Juice for more information.

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “ideas worth spreading’” that began in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from “technology, entertainment and design.” Since then, TED has grown to include multiple conferences, along with numerous other offerings such as TEDx programs, which are designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to participate in TED events through a live-streamed program. At TEDx events, a screen of TED Talk videos — or a combination of live presenters and TED Talks — sparks deep conversation and connections.
