The Technological Magic Behind the Orlando Magic
ShareA Message from Stacey Johnson, President, East and Winter Park Campuses
East Campus technology students recently learned about the role technology plays in the game of basketball. On Friday, December 7, 2018, the Valencia Technology Club visited the Orlando Magic and toured the Amway Center. Students entered the media control room to see how audio and video were configured throughout the building. They also toured the information technology server room, which houses the powerful computers that store media content and provide connectivity to the hundreds of cameras installed in the Amway Center.
After the tour, the students engaged in a panel discussion with the following Central Florida technology leaders:
- Vice President of Technology of the Orlando Magic Jeff Lutes;
- Chief Executive Officer of the Orlando Tech Association Jim Thomas;
- Chief Information Officer of Red Lobster Lou Grande; and
- President of Parsound Pierce Mooney.
The leaders shared about their careers in their respective technology industries and provided advice on ways to be successful in a technology career.
Following the panel discussion, the Valencia Technology Club watched the Orlando Magic take on the Indiana Pacers. Several students noted their excitement about the overall experience of the day.
“This event really helped solidify my place in the information technology world,” shared Technology Club President Paola Villanueva Tirado. “I was able to connect what I was learning in school with what is going on in technology in the Orlando area.”
Following the game, the Technology Club walked courtside and cut down the Orlando Magic basketball net.
