UnitedHealthcare Selected as New Healthcare Vendor

A message from Amy Bosley, Vice President of Organizational Development and Human Resources

After a thorough and rigorous process, the Organizational Development and Human Resources (OD/HR) Advisory Healthcare Evaluation team has recommended that Valencia select UnitedHealthcare as our health insurance provider. Dr. Shugart has approved this selection and has made his recommendation to the District Board of Trustees, who will consider the proposal and take action in its next meeting on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Cigna will remain our provider through the end of this year, and UnitedHealthcare coverage will begin Friday, January 1, 2016.

The OD/HR Advisory Healthcare Evaluation team (which included a representative from faculty, administrators, career staff and professional staff) carefully considered proposals made by two vendors: Cigna and UnitedHealthcare. UnitedHealthcare was selected and pending board approval, we will begin negotiating the contract and working on plan design, such as deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses, in preparation for our fall open enrollment in October 2015.

At this time, we don’t have many details, as we have not engaged with UnitedHealthcare outside of the bid process. However, we have been and will continue to communicate frequently about the process and our plans moving forward. We encourage you to read The Juice email newsletter for updates throughout the summer and fall as we prepare for our October open enrollment process.

I know that health insurance is an important benefit and that the implications of changing healthcare vendors can be overwhelming. Please know that we are working to ensure that you realize as little disruption in your providers as possible and are crafting new plans with more options to better meet your healthcare needs and those of your family.
