Valencia Dance Theatre and Jon Lehrer Dance Company Unite

A Message from Wendy Givoglu, Interim President, East and Winter Park Campuses

Virtual dance is alive and well on East Campus in the Dance Department. The Jon Lehrer Dance Company visited the East Campus Dance Studio virtually from Monday, January 11, 2021 – Friday, January 15, 2021. The company is in its 10th year of working with Valencia dancers, and this year, Jon Lehrer was assisted by Christina Cavallo, his rehearsal director. The Valencia Dance Theatre (VDT) dance company was honored to spend a week with the Jon Lehrer Dance Company, setting the piece “Solstice.”

The residency is a vehicle to bring in professional master artists to enable Valencia dance majors to begin developing a professional resume, prepare for the dance world and create connections. Normally, a master artist would be on campus in residency with the dancers to provide hands-on instruction to the dancers, and this year, Jon did not miss a beat. A large projector was installed in the dance studio so that Jon and Christina could interact with the students and provide input on their dance technique.

Professor of Dance and Dance Department Chair Suzanne Salapa shared, “Working with Jon is a gift. He is a talented artist and beautiful choreographer who understands our students, and every time he teaches, their talents and abilities shine. Working in this new virtual world proved very successful. We are excited for our College community to see the fruits of our labor in the Spring Dance Concert.”

Professor of Dance and Artistic Director of Valencia Dance Theatre Lesley Brasseux Rodgers is working with the students to rehearse the piece, which will then be a part of the Spring Dance Concert that will be filmed and edited by Valencia’s Digital Media students in early March. The concert will be available for viewing on Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17, 2021.

“Along with the Performing Arts Center staff and the Digital Media program who will film and edit our work for viewing, we cannot do this without them,” exclaimed Suzanne.
