Valencia Security Launches Safety App for Employees and Students

In an effort to provide greater security for our employees, students and visitors on our campuses, the Valencia Security department announces a new mobile app, Valencia College Safety. The software behind the app has been used by more than 80 colleges and universities across the nation including the University of Florida, Florida State University, Bethune-Cookman University and Stetson University.

This app allows users to simultaneously call and send their location to security in case of an emergency on Valencia campuses, eliminating the need to find one of our campuses’ “blue light” outdoor emergency telephones.

“The Valencia College Safety mobile app essentially puts one of those blue light emergency telephones into the hands of each and every one of our students and employees who have a smartphone and have downloaded the mobile app,” explained Mike Favorit, managing director, safety and security. “This not only allows students and employees to request help faster, but it allows the Security team to pinpoint the location of the victim to provide assistance sooner.”

Please note, however, that the app does not take the place of calling 911 in emergencies, as calling 911 should still be the first course of action.

The app also offers safety features, such as tools that allow users to request Valencia security or a friend to watch their location remotely as they walk on campus to their destination, along with an emergency contacts list, the ability to report a tip, campus maps and more. Watch the video below for a preview:

Read the next two issues of The Juice for details on each of the features.

The app can be used on all Valencia campuses, the School of Public Safety, the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center and the District Office. In the near future, the mobile app will also work at the Roper Building, the Fire Training Facility, the McCoy Annex and the Downtown Campus. Please note that any location-based features on the app, such as simultaneously calling and sending your location to Valencia security, will only work on Valencia campuses and locations; they will not work off campus.

We invite you to download the Valencia College Safety mobile app today. If you have any questions or feedback after you use the app, please contact Art King, assistant director, security, at aking3@valenciacollege.edu or 407-299-5000, extension 1327.

It like it. The app was easy to download and navigate. It’s intuitive. The Virtual Walk Home is a good feature and the information available is detailed without feeling overwhelming.
