Valencia’s First Recruiter Focuses on Diversity and Growth

One of the goals of Valencia’s Five-Year Impact Plan is to increase the diversity of faculty, staff and leadership at the College — ensuring Valencia’s employees reflect an eclectic pool of talent equipped with unique perspectives, backgrounds and ideas.

To accomplish this, the College hired Val San Marco as Valencia’s first recruiter. Throughout Valencia’s ongoing expansion and growth, Val will be working to fill the College’s job openings with qualified, diverse applicants — enabling hiring managers to select from candidates with unique backgrounds and experiences.

With more than ten years of specializing in recruitment, Val has extensive experience developing and implementing recruitment strategies.

In particular, her eight years of experience in aviation translates to a keen ability to leverage outside-the-box tools and creative thinking to recruit for hard-to-fill positions. Furthermore, her recent experience as a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) rater for Google has refined her knowledge of modern recruitment technologies, including targeted web advertisements, and her background in developing recruitment strategies and programs for start-up businesses has enhanced her natural aptitude for delivering results under challenging conditions.

These experiences and skills have already assisted Val in strategically planning and implementing recruitment tools and programs, such as social media, job boards and targeted web advertisements, to attract diverse and talented candidate pools.

“We have developed a comprehensive recruiting strategy that includes all College positions,” Val explained. “The goal is to position Valencia as an employer of choice. Our recruiting strategy aims to ensure we increase and maximize our exposure and visibility as a potential employer, sharing our culture, our vision and our career opportunities to all.”

Already, Val has made her mark on the College and is an invaluable resource in enhancing our recruitment efforts.

“It has been great having Val here at the College as the recruiter,” said Jennifer Page, director, employment and onboarding. “Val is able to see the bigger picture while creating a relationship with many hiring managers to better understand their specific needs. We are so fortunate to have someone with great enthusiasm, experience and innovation to help move us to the next level of finding the best candidate for Valencia.”

However, as Val explains, she isn’t really the only recruiter at the College.

“Valencia is a great place to work, so let’s spread the best kept secret,” she said. “The goal is to transform each Valencia employee into a recruiter and brand ambassador.”
