Vicki Fine Shares Her Pathway to Leadership

Valencia College takes great pride in those who are appointed to leadership roles. Valencia leaders are held to the highest standards, which include the five essential supervisory competencies, that help create a culture of appreciation and recognition to build an exceptional team that contributes to student success.slice

This is particularly true for Vicki Fine, manager, career pathways, who helps establish pathways for students, even before they graduate high school, through tech express.

While Vicki is new to her managerial role at Valencia, she’s no stranger to leadership — having participated in numerous leadership development workshops, like Valencia’s PIVOT 180, and earning certifications from organizations like the Human Resources Certification Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management. Vicki calls upon these experiences constantly to develop a team atmosphere of inspiration and motivation, goal-based achievement and integrity.

Vicki describes herself as a hands-on leader who believes that effectiveness is measured in both tangible and intangible ways — like increased productivity, engagement and even enthusiasm for the work. But the ultimate metric for Vicki and her team is successfully building pathways for students who want to attend Valencia. It is through communication and commitment to the community that this is possible.

Vicki also relies upon daily prayer to find the strength to be a leader for her team.

“My values are rooted in my faith,” she explained. “Through daily prayer, I seek guidance and wisdom to ensure that I serve others with grace, compassion and humility by leading with authority vs. power. While I think these terms are often used interchangeably, I don’t believe they mean the same thing. By authority I mean the skill of influencing others to willingly work together with you toward the vision’s goals.”

Further expounding on the differences in leveraging her position and earning influence and respect from others, she explained, “Building influence is not about manipulating, persuading or pressuring people for personal benefit. Leadership is influencing people for mutual benefit. Having power over people is one thing, but I believe having authority with people is quite another. Authority is about who you are as a person. Authority is about your character, and your character is determined by your choices.”

In developing her leadership style, Vicki also heavily relies upon her values, which closely align with Valencia’s values.

Vicki is a life-long learner who seeks to build an inclusive environment that is safe for sharing ideals, goals, successes and failures. She is someone who maintains integrity by working collaboratively to achieve a vision of transforming lives and inspiring every individual — whether that is a student or employee — to excellence.
