Welcome Kelly Astro, Director, Valencia Promise/Take Stock in Children


A Message from, Amy Kleeman, Assistant Vice President, College Transitions

Kelly Astro joined Valencia on Monday, March 21, 2016, as director of Valencia Promise/Take Stock in Children, a new position that provides oversight and leadership in the implementation and on-going work of assigning mentors to students, providing college scholarships and cultivating a solid foundation for student success.

Kelly has more than 15 years in educational program administration, teaching, training and curriculum development in the areas of leadership, college access, career preparation, civic engagement and social responsibility. Prior to Valencia, she worked at the University of Central Florida as the director of research and civic engagement for the Burnett Honors College. Kelly was also a faculty fellow for the LEAD Scholars Academy, where she taught leadership development courses with a focus on youth and education to second-year UCF students and was an adjunct professor for the College of Education and Human Performance.

During her time at UCF, she established the largest honors college service-learning/public school partnership in the United States, impacting more than 10,000 K-5 students in Orange County Title I schools and designed and implemented a college-access program for more than 6,000 fifth- and seventh-grade students in 15 Orange County Title I schools.

Before UCF, she served as director of The Drexel Experience, Service Learning and AJ Drexel Leadership Program at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she designed, developed and implemented service-learning and first-year experience programs for more than 2,000 freshmen annually, along with the largest Junior Achievement-University partnership in the United States, impacting more than 50,000 K-5 students in over 100 Philadelphia public schools.

Kelly has a B.S.Ed. in elementary education from the University of Central Florida and an M.Ed. in science of instruction, education from Drexel University.

Currently located at the District Office, the Take Stock/Valencia Promise offices will be relocating to the West Campus in the near future.
