Welcome New West Campus Tenure-Track Faculty

A Message from Falecia Williams, President, West and Downtown Campuses

Our West Campus family is growing. Join me in welcoming our new tenure-track faculty.

Jenice Armstead, Professor, Business
Jenice Armstead is a self-published author, small business owner and professor with more than 20 years of professional experience in the public and private sector. She has an extensive background in business development, human resources management and job classification. Jenice has an MBA with a concentration in human resources from Saint Leo University and a doctorate in business administration from Jones International University.

Cory Blackwell, Professor, Biology
Cory Blackwell is originally from Mississippi but received his bachelor’s at Dillard University in New Orleans. He chose to further his education and attended — and graduated from — the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis with his Ph.D. in biomedical sciences. He has been teaching on the collegiate level for the past seven years in the biological sciences (biology, microbiology, anatomy, etc.). After this year on the West Campus, he will transition to the Downtown Campus in fall 2019.

Richard Jerousek, Professor, Physics
Richard Jerousek is an enthusiastic astrophysicist and planetary scientist with a primary research focus on planetary rings and the origin of our solar system. Since 2007, he has worked on the Cassini Mission to Saturn, which was dramatically and intentionally crashed into Saturn in September of 2017 in order to leave the Saturn system in a pristine state, devoid of microbes, which may have hitched a ride from Earth. Since the end of the Cassini Mission, he has continued to analyze the wealth of data collected by Cassini’s Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph and has also performed observations of Saturn’s rings with the Hubble Space Telescope. Richard also tinkers with experimental noise music and drone metal and enjoys fossil hunting and bird watching around Central Florida.

Michael Moniz, Professor, Speech
Michael Moniz considers himself a lifelong learner and encourages his students to do the same. He is passionate about the field and study of communication, so much so that his students and colleagues find his enthusiasm to be contagious. His primary goal outside of teaching is to engage, encourage and provide an all-inclusive environment where his students feel comfortable in their own academic journeys.

Sharon Valdez, Professor, Nursing
Sharon Valdez is a Colorado native and moved to Florida three years ago. She has been a bedside labor and delivery nurse for 21 years and is new to the academic world. She loves being an educator. Sharon and her husband have three grown children, and they love to travel and explore Florida’s beaches.

Melonie Sexton, Professor, Psychology
Melonie is proud to call herself a first-generation college student and a first-generation American (her family originates from Jamaica). She received two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Central Florida before going on to obtain her Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience from Vanderbilt University. After graduating, Melonie worked as an academic advisor for 2.5 years before going back to teach in the classroom. In 2015, Melonie joined Valencia as a professor of psychology on the West Campus. She loves working in a learner-centered environment and finding new ways to engage students in both psychological content and research.

Anu George, Professor, Nursing
Anu George, RN, BSN, MSN, has more than seven years of experience in medical surgical nursing and over four years of teaching experience. She moved to Florida just last year from Illinois and started with Valencia in summer 2018.

Read next month’s West Campus Concentrate for the introduction of additional new faculty.
