A Message from the West Campus Learning Support Services Department
Please enjoy these highlights from West Campus Learning Support.
Schaum’s Study Aids Now Available Online
The library has acquired a large collection of Schaum’s Student Study Aids eBooks from McGraw Hill publishers, including titles from the popular Schaum’s Outlines and Demystified series. The eBooks feature content overviews, outlines and study guides for numerous disciplines across the sciences, math, social sciences and language arts. The eBooks are now available in the library catalog.
MLA Ninth Edition Updates
A new edition of the Modern Language Association’s MLA Handbook, the ninth edition, was published in 2021 and contains updates to the formatting of source citations in academic papers.
Librarians have completed and published updated color-coded citation guides to reflect the changes for MLA 9. The guides have been published in a LibGuide and linked from the library’s MLA, APA and Chicago Citation Guides page. (The older MLA 8 citation guides remain on the website for now) Canvas modules in the library’s Research Workshops self-enrolling course and the Canvas Commons have also been updated.
For a detailed list of changes from MLA 8 to MLA 9, see the Purdue OWL.
WEST CAMPUS TUTORING CENTER
While the majority of tutoring now happens through our collegewide Distance Tutoring platform, we have a small crew of tutors and plentiful resources for students in the West Campus Tutoring Center. We are located in Building 7, Room 240 along with our neighbors, the West Campus Math Lab. Our tutors can assist students with course content and study skills in math, science, business and language courses.
Students can also book study rooms for private or group study, use our new rolling whiteboards on the main tutoring floor, check out calculators for up to three days, access online work on the computers, and print, scan and copy. Please visit our website for tutor schedules and full details.
Even if students don’t think they need assistance, encourage them to stop by, meet our staff and see what we offer. We recommend that students study while on campus in one of our many support spaces to take full advantage of our services and avoid the distractions of home. Plus, they might find a study partner!
Amanda DaGiau currently serves as the interim instructional lab supervisor for the West Campus Tutoring Center and has worked with Valencia since 2008 when she started as a biology tutor.
Feel free to stop by to meet the whole team and check out the space. A few of our talented folks include:
- Guens Delius, learning assistant II, is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree in software development and is a former member of Valencia’s award winning Quiz Bowl Team.
- Gadiel Perez-Arrieta, clerk, federal work-study, who was previously an educator at a zoo and plans to study veterinary medicine at University of Florida.
- Michele Maiden, learning assistant II, who consistently ensures she does everything in her power to help students, a legacy from her days in customer service.
We look forward to serving you and your students this semester!
