101 Students Celebrated at Nurse Pinning Ceremony

Congratulations to the Valencia students who completed the Nursing Associate in Science Degree. On Tuesday, August 1, 2017, 90 traditional students and 11 advanced standing students from summer term 2017 were pinned at a nurse pinning ceremony at Olympia High School. This summer’s ceremony featured the largest graduating class yet — which indicates the success of Valencia’s efforts to meet the community’s nursing needs.

Many of the students, like Daniele Mellon, overcame significant challenges to complete the program — making the pinning ceremony both emotional and powerful.

“Valencia is a really good school,” Daniele commented. “The program is very hard, but anyone can do it. I had a few deaths [in the family], many medical conditions and I was working full time, and I made it through. You just want to have it in your mind that you want to get it done.”

Dean of Nursing Rise Sandrowitz commended all the students for their hard work, perseverance and dedication.

“You looked at a 2,000-page textbook and said I can learn this,” Rise said to the audience’s laughter. “You can overcome anything.”

Looking forward, some of the recent graduates, like advanced-standing student Stacy Tiedeman, are considering enrolling in Valencia’s future Bachelor of Science in Nursing, which is pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

“I’m [planning on] getting my bachelor’s degree,” Stacy said. “I would like to see the [Valencia] curriculum and see what they have planned for it.”
