A Special Announcement for Part-Time Faculty

A Message from Amy Bosley, Vice President, Organizational Development and Human Resources

In Valencia’s new, strategic Five-Year Impact Plan, part-time faculty engagement is included as an initiative to further student success. This will be accomplished by providing essential support to our part-time faculty members, because we believe that the engagement of part-time faculty is intrinsically linked to student success. We also believe that positive student learning outcomes result when supported, engaged part-time faculty and Valencia College are mutually invested in each other.

Since the work of building the new strategic plan began in 2015, several of you — our part-time faculty members — have participated in the process by serving on a work team or providing your input on the development of the goals and objectives for the Part-time Faculty Engagement Initiative. Last year, in the fall, our work on the initiative was followed up with town hall meetings, where your campus president and/or executive dean, and I heard from you on topics related to teaching and learning, compensation, orientation and onboarding, and professional development opportunities.

So today, I am pleased to send you a special announcement from College President Sandy Shugart regarding progress made and actions taken as a result of our strategic planning efforts and the town hall meetings last fall. (Click the video below to hear Dr. Shugart’s announcement.)

Just as Valencia has invested in our Teaching/Learning Academy and Associate Faculty Certification program, Valencia continues to deepen our investment in our part-time faculty members as well. And, there is more to come.

Later this spring, a draft of the policy for this benefit will go through the review channels established by the Faculty Association for input and feedback. A final draft will be presented to the District Board of Trustees for approval in June 2017.

I am truly excited about the work that is underway to build a greater infrastructure of support for our faculty members’ success. If you have questions about the paid time off benefit or about the corresponding policy, feel free to contact me at abosley@valenciacollege.edu or 407-582-8255.
