Call for Help or Request a Virtual Escort with New Safety App

Late night at work and have a long walk to your car? Enhance your safety during that walk with the new Valencia College Safety mobile app, which was released last week for all Valencia employees, students and visitors.

This app provides many features that can help improve your safety while at Valencia. Over the next two weeks, we’ll take a closer look at the app’s features. This week, we’ll review the Help Now, Virtual Walkhome and Friend Walk features, which can only be used on Valencia campuses, the School of Public Safety, the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center and the District Office

Help Now

Help Now is the app’s most robust feature. Do you remember those blue light emergency telephones that are placed throughout our campuses and are designed to call Security while simultaneously sharing your location? The Help Now feature works just like those blue light phones, but you can carry it everywhere with you on campus.

Of course, we hope you never have to use this feature, but if you do, just click “Help Now” and then “Trigger Mobile BlueLight.” Security will immediately determine your location, and you will be simultaneously connected to speak to a Security representative on the phone. And if you can’t speak due to the situation, you can conduct a mobile chat with Security instead.

Please note this feature only works while on a Valencia location. If you are at a neighboring business, please call 911.

Virtual Walkhome

Although campus security is available to personally escort employees, students and visitors to your car or another building, if you prefer a virtual escort, use the mobile app. The Virtual Walkhome feature allows you to let the Security know where you’re traveling to, so the team can monitor your progress to your end destination. How does it work?

  • Select Virtual Walkhome and then Start Virtual Walkhome.
  • Security will confirm that a representative is ready to monitor you.
  • Select your destination on the campus map.
  • Start walking.
  • If you need assistance at any time, tap the Emergency button.
  • When you reach your destination, tap Finish Trip.

This feature also only works while on a Valencia location.

Friend Walk

Friend Walk is similar to Virtual Walkhome, but instead of sending your location to the Valencia Security department, you can send it to a friend so he or she can watch as you walk to your destination. Your friend can trigger a call to emergency services if necessary. Here’s how it works:

  • Select Friend Walk and then Start Friend Walk.
  • Click Share with a Friend to send a text or email to the friend you’d like to watch you walk.
  • Your friend will receive the message with a link. When your friend clicks the link, he or she will receive a map with your location.
  • Pick your destination and start moving.
  • If you’re in a panic, hit the button to notify your friend and start an emergency call to 911.
  • If you or your friend disconnects, it will end the walk and give you the option to make an emergency call.
  • When you reach your destination, tap Finish Trip.

This feature also only works on Valencia locations. Read The Juice and The Grove next week for features that work on and off Valencia campuses.

We invite you to download the Valencia College Safety mobile app today.

If you have any questions or feedback after you use the app, please contact Art King, assistant director, security, at or 407-299-5000, extension 1327.
