Research opportunities can be beneficial in expanding the quality of the learning experience for our students, and they ultimately improve the teaching and learning at Valencia. If you’re looking to learn more about using undergraduate research to include in a High-Impact Practice Plan, this is the perfect opportunity.

Valencia has introduced two new faculty development courses to help you become acquainted with methods for integrating undergraduate research in your classes. As part of the collegewide, undergraduate research initiative, the Undergraduate Research Work Team initiated the development of these courses.

In “LCTS6317: Introduction to Creating Undergraduate Research Experiences,” participants will explore an overview of undergraduate research opportunities, research models and examples of implementations across a variety of disciplines. The next course takes place Friday, February 23 – Friday, March 2, 2018, and will have online course work.

“Undergraduate research is easier to implement in your classes than you might think,” said Laura Sessions, professor, chemistry. “This class will give an overview of the support for this work at Valencia and give an opportunity to start thinking about project ideas in your discipline. Undergraduate research creates highly engaging experiences and open-ended thinking for students.”

The course that follows is “LCTS6417: Creating an Embedded Undergraduate Research Experience,” which will allow participants to incorporate the research experience in their class by tailoring the experience to their course outcomes. Participants will be familiarized with the logistics of the embedded model and the Institutional Review Board process at Valencia.

“Finding ways to provide students that hands-on, all-in experience doesn’t have to be a daunting task,” said Melonie Sexton, professor, psychology. “This class is here to help and get you started.” The next course occurs Friday, March 30 – Thursday, April 19, 2018, and will feature two face-to-face classes on West Campus in addition to online course work.

For faculty interested in enrolling, the online portions of both of these sections will take place in Canvas rather than in Blackboard. To register, click the links below.
