College Update: Preparing for the Upcoming School Year

A Special Message from Sandy Shugart, Valencia College President

We recognize that many of our colleagues who have school-aged children are struggling with decisions about educational options in the upcoming school year. While there are many unknowns about what the next few months will bring, I assure you that I, and the senior leadership team, understand the difficulty of the choices you face.

Over the last few months, we have shared frequently that our top priorities are the health and safety of our employees and students and the continuity of student learning. As you consider the best option for your child(ren)’s education for the 2020-2021 school year, please know that our values remain centered on your health and that of your family. We respect the decisions you make as a parent and, should you decide that online education is the best alternative for your family, will work with you to adjust your work hours so that you can both work and provide care for your loved ones.

Because each situation is unique, we ask your full partnership and engagement in conversations to determine how best to ensure you are supported and our work needs are met. As you make plans for the upcoming school year, please connect with your supervisor to begin conversations about flexible scheduling needs for the fall and spring terms.

The Organizational Development and Human Resources (ODHR) team is available to support you and your supervisor as you seek creative solutions for this challenging set of circumstances. Feel free to reach out to ODHR at HR4U@valenciacollege.edu, or call the HR4U helpline at 407-299-5000, extension HR4U (4748) at any time for guidance and support. You are also welcome to contact me directly at sshugart@valenciacollege.edu if you have concerns.

I want to thank you, again, for all of your dedication and hard work that has gotten us through spring and summer. I look forward to having a productive and successful academic year, and promise that we will get through these tough times together with flexibility and grace.

Continue to be safe and take care of yourselves and your families.
