Valencia Foundation Receives Donation from Femmes De Coeur

The Valencia Foundation received a donation of $12,500 from the Femmes De Coeur (Women of Heart) organization. The contribution is earmarked to support Valencia nursing students through the Femmes De Coeur Endowed Nursing Scholarship.

Femmes de Coeur is an Orlando-based, not-for-profit volunteer organization comprised of women in the community who volunteer their time and share a common goal to serve the needs of the community, and who partner with existing organizations to help accomplish their mission.

UCF Awards Valencia President Honorary Doctorate

Dr. Sandy Shugart, president of Valencia College, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Central Florida (UCF) at the December 14 commencement ceremony, in honor of his contributions to Central Florida’s education community.

UCF’s president, Dr. John Hitt, presented Dr. Shugart with a Doctor of Humane Letters, saying that his “exceptional leadership at Valencia College has transformed the lives of tens of thousands of students and created a national model for higher education.”

Rogue Scholars Raise $850 for Osceola Council on Aging

A message from Dr. Kathleen Plinske, Campus President, Osceola and Lake Nona

A huge “thank you” to everyone who supported the Rock ‘n Roll Benefit Concert with the Rogue Scholars at Osceola Campus on Saturday, December 8. Thanks to your kindness and generosity, we were able to raise $850 for the Osceola County Council on Aging Food Pantry, and we also received many nonperishable food items for the food pantry. A special thank you to the band members Andrew Becker, Paul Chapman, Bret Sholar, Jorge Soto, Jeffry Pena Guzman, Martin Olvera, Jim Becker, and Al Groccia for providing a great fun show.

Congratulations to the 2013 Roueche Excellence Award Recipients

Congratulations to the outstanding Valencia employees nominated by colleagues to receive the 2013 John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Award. The John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Awards are open to League Alliance member institutions to celebrate outstanding contributions in improving student learning and leadership by community college faculty and staff. The recipients are:

East and Winter Park Campuses

Chris Borglum, professor of English; Ralph Clemente, professor of film production technology; Carl Creasman, professor of history; Jody DeVoe, professor of mathematics; and Rob McCaffrey, professor of graphics technology.

West Campus

Lisa Macon, interim dean, engineering, computer programming, & technology; Larry Herndon, professor of student life skills; Gustavo Morales, professor of geology; and Robin Simmons, professor of English.

Osceola & Lake Nona Campuses

Ilia Cordero, coordinator of financial aid services; Betty Fenner, humanities instructor; Al Groccia, professor of mathematics; and Brian Macon, professor of mathematics.

Recipients will be recognized in a series of activities and promotions, and honored at special events during the League’s Innovations Conference on March 10-13, 2013 in Dallas, Texas. Congratulations to the 2013 NISOD Award Recipients

Congratulations to the six outstanding Valencia employees nominated by colleagues and selected by a representative group of peers to receive the 2013 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award. The award recipients are:

Mary Beck – professor of geology and earth science, West Campus; Ryan Kasha – professor of mathematics, West Campus; James McDonald – professor of criminal justice technology, East Campus; John Niss – professor of mathematics, Winter Park Campus; Andrew Ray – professor and program chair of building construction, civil/surveying, and drafting/design, West Campus; and Richard Weinsier – senior instructional assistant II, East Campus.

Every year, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development honors faculty and staff who have dedicated their careers to excellence in improving student learning.  This year’s award recipients will be honored by Dr. Sandy Shugart, president of Valencia College, at a spring recognition reception and at a special ceremony at the NISOD Conference next year.
