DirectConnect Boosts Bachelor’s Degree Attainment

DirectConnect — the program launched in 2006 by Valencia College and the University of Central (UCF) to guarantee Valencia graduates admission and a smooth transition to UCF — has changed thousands of students’ lives by helping them obtain bachelor’s degrees. Now, DirectConnect, which has expanded to students at six Central Florida state colleges, is playing a role in making UCF a nationally recognized leader in transfer student success, according to an article in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

Since the program’s launch in 2006, UCF has experienced:

  • A 382% increase in degrees earned by minority students, from 494 to 2,379.
  • A 378% jump in degrees earned by Hispanic and Latinx students, from 280 to 1,313.
  • A 369% hike in degrees earned by black students, 125 to 598.
  • A 372% rise in degrees earned by Pell grant recipients — who tend to be from modest-income households — from 682 to 3,220.
  • A 195% increase in degrees awarded to first-generation students, from 566 to 1,669.
