Featured Colleague: Academic Advisor Teshia Mincey on Her Journey from Student Worker to Academic AdvisorShare
By Dani Moritz-Long
Then a student on Osceola Campus, Academic Advisor Teshia Mincey’s Valencia career began for simple reasons. Working as an Atlas Lab work-study student, she explained, “was a way for me to attend school full time and earn some extra money.”
As it happens, her work-study position also became a catalyst for her career.
Fondly recollecting her ah-ha moment when she realized she wanted to build a career at Valencia, she said, “I knew I wanted to grow within Valencia to be a part of something that was benefiting the community and changing student lives.”
A decade later, that’s exactly what she continues to do.
Along the way, Teshia has grown tremendously. She’s earned her associate degree, her bachelor’s degree in psychology and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in community college higher education at the University of Central Florida (UCF). She’s also grown from a student leader and work-study student to a support specialist II, an Answer Center advisor and, most recently, an academic advisor.
Perhaps most importantly, she’s blossomed as an individual.
“I’m proud of seeing myself grow from a timid non-traditional student to the confident academic advisor who I am today, but that would not have been possible if it were not for the influential Valencia professors and various staff members and supervisors who helped me find my advising voice.”
Today, Teshia proudly uses that voice to give back to the community that, in many ways, made her who she is today.
“I’m proud to see our students have their ah-ha moments, discover their paths and use what they’ve learned at Valencia to help them to achieve their career and life goals,” she said.
For example, she explained, a Valencia graduate recently reconnected with her to share a progress report.
“One of my former students I advised from her first term at Valencia until she graduated last year stopped by the campus to let me know she’ll be graduating from UCF in spring 2018, and she wanted to thank me for helping her along the way,” Teshia said. “That’s what makes me smile — to know I helped someone along their journey as others have helped me.”
Commenting on Teshia’s ability to help and inspire others, Christopher Garner-Quintero, assistant director, advising, said, “Teshia is a team member I consider to be a uniting force on the team. She has a remarkable way in which she works with students and brings a unified force to the team that focuses on service and quality. She is a true asset and talented advisor and is a true inspiration to everyone around her.”
In her free time, you can find Teshia enjoying the humor in life, writing poetry and making memories with friends, family and her 4-year-old poodle, Zoey.
