Born in Orlando, Florida, and a former student of Valencia Community College, JC Walker, technology support specialist, has been working in the Information Technology (IT) field for 30 years.
After graduating from Jones High School, he received an associate’s degree from Valencia and spent 12 years in IT working for Super Foods Services Inc. Then, in June of 1992, JC accepted a position at Valencia in the IT department, supporting the main frame computer system.
“Being an alumnus, I experienced firsthand what I perceived as a positive, learning atmosphere,” JC said when asked what attracted him to return to Valencia as an employee. “I wanted to be a part of this work, in assisting others on the journey of learning.”
When the data center was outsourced to Collegis Inc. (later named SunGard) in June of 1998, JC took every opportunity to obtain a diversity of experiences.
He shares that “while employed at SunGard, [he] worked in a variety of roles including portal administration, Oracle database administration, Banner records maintenance, [and] up to [his] current role of technology support specialist.” In 2009, Valencia acquired its data center back, and JC was “happy to report that I have gone full circle in the journey home.”
In all his work, JC strives to develop and maintain healthy relationships with coworkers and students, while seizing every opportunity to enhance the learning initiatives of the college. To help accomplish this, he has looked to his manager, Art Ward, who he has worked with for over 19 years.
“Art inspires me through his leadership style (lead by example), his character (integrity), work ethics and most of all his lifestyle as a devout Christian (living a life of service through love),” JC said.
JC’s hobbies include fishing, camping, and practicing Yoga and Kwanzaa. He serves as a Boy Scout leader and a Valencia student club advisor for IMAGES (Influential Men Applying Gifts Employing Strategies), as well as supports the VaHSA (Valencia Haitian Student Association). JC is also an active member of the Peace and Justice Initiative at Valencia, and Toastmasters International.
For JC, working at Valencia means being a part of a positive change in the lives of people. “My primary goal is to excel in my spiritual development, being an advocate of unity and peace,” JC said, “and through education we can change the quality of our lives and assist others in doing the same – education is important work.”
