What Michael Lergier, facilities operations manager for the Continuing Education Operations Department, likes best about his job is the opportunity to interact with a vast amount of individuals on a daily basis.

Michael had his first taste of being a Valencia employee, and the diversity of interactions that a career at the college would provide, in 2000 when he obtained a work-study position at the East Campus computer lab. In that role, Michael helped students with a variety of different software programs such as the Microsoft Office suite, and with other tasks including Atlas registration and WebCT support.

A year later, he transitioned to a part-time staff position where he assisted different areas by working in the library and for the audio visual services team. While working part-time, Michael was a full-time student at Valencia and the University of Central Florida (UCF), earning an Associate of Science degree in computer engineering technology and a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, with a minor in communication and marketing.

In 2009, Michael was hired into Valencia’s Continuing Education department in his current role.

“Since becoming a full-time Valencia staff member, I have worked extremely hard to make sure the Continuing Education department continues to be successful by providing its staff with the tools and support they require on a day-to-day basis,” Michael shared. “At times, this can become very challenging but at the same time very rewarding, which provides me with a great deal of satisfaction knowing that my efforts are directly affecting the college in a positive way.”

As a member of the Continuing Education team, Michael has made several notable contributions, including playing a key role in organizing the division’s move from the Sand Lake Center to Building 10 on West Campus. This move was a tremendous undertaking, considering Michael was in charge of making sure everything transitioned correctly, and at the same time he made arrangements to get everything up and running in the new building. Michael even took it upon himself to physically set the sprinklers when they were leaking.

“While he was at Sand Lake, [Michael] researched and made recommendations to keep the cost of our utilities, supplies and equipment down,” said Elaina Paige, assistant director of the operations department for Continuing Education and Michael’s supervisor. “Now that we are at the West Campus, staff members can still rely on Mike when they have questions or concerns about room scheduling/conflicts.”

Mike continues to work well with the college security, custodial, maintenance, facilities and the Office for Information Technology to ensure that the day-to-day operations of Continuing Education runs smoothly. “As Mike’s supervisor, I have noticed that even when a tough situation arises, Mike still keeps cool and unflustered,” Elaina added.

Michael was born in Puerto Rico and spent the first eight years of his life there before moving to the United States in 1990. “I feel blessed to be where I am today and I try not to take anything for granted, which is an attitude I carry with me every day at work,” he said.

In his free time Michael enjoys playing basketball and videogames, and watching movies.

    I appreciate Michael's commitment to the college's energy savings program. I have enjoyed working both with Michael and Ms. Elaina Page in coordinating efforts to best serve both their students while also providing the best savings opportunities for the college. Michael sought to first understand the program and then apply the guidelines to the Continuing Education program. Thank you for highlighting this Valencia employee.

Ms. Paige did a great job in recruiting him and adding him to our Staff. He is a very Motivated, Dedicated and highly Professional person to deal with.
