Fernando Gutierrez Continues to Advance Chess Skills

A Message from Wendy Givoglu, Interim President, East and Winter Park Campuses

Technical Support Specialist Fernando Gutierrez has served as the Chess Club advisor for the Winter Park Campus since summer 2019, but since the pandemic, has missed interacting with students. So Fernando has worked to keep up with his chess skills and communicate with other chess players.

Fernando keeps our Winter Park Campus Chess Club members up to date on upcoming chess events via the Official Chess Club Discord, a site for students interested in playing chess. Discord has provided him a way to reconnect with the Winter Park student chess members and motivate them to play again, resulting in many talented players attending and enjoying the meetings. Fernando has found that with the creation of the Discord page, the network among students interested in playing chess continues to grow as new members join and show interest in playing the sport.

On Discord, he’s shared information about the University of Central Florida (UCF) Chess Club, which invites all individuals who are interested in playing chess regardless of their knowledge of chess. This weekly event is held at the Student Union on UCF Campus each Friday. And, he’s shared information about the Orlando Chess Club, which allows new members to play casual or competitive chess, with weekly meetings on Saturdays at the Downtown Credo. On average, about 25 people attend these events.
