Five Things You Need to Know About Canvas: Preparing for Launch

A Message from Page Jerzak, Director, Online Teaching and Learning

Welcome to a new monthly series, Five Things You Need to Know About Canvas. As we move from Blackboard to the Canvas learning management system, culminating with all courses being offered to students in Canvas in May 2018, this series will give you five snippets of need-to-know information that can help you with the transition.

Here are the top five things to know about Canvas:

1. We plan to release Canvas to faculty starting Friday, June 30, 2017. When Canvas is open, you will be able to log in using your Atlas username and password. Click here to access and bookmark the site.

2. All faculty members will have access to webinar training, provided directly from Canvas, also starting on Friday, June 30. Many of these webinars can be taken for professional development credit. A separate email will be sent to you with detailed directions on accessing the webinars. Rest assured that additional development opportunities are being planned this summer to help you transition to Canvas. Once these are ready, we will make additional announcements in the Faculty Insight and The Grove.

3. All faculty accounts in Canvas will automatically have five development spaces (or “sandboxes”) in them. This means you can start playing around in Canvas as soon as you have access.

4. Plan before you move! Based on faculty recommendations from Destination, take the Campus Introductory webinars and review your Blackboard courses and files before you start moving any content over.

5. The Centers for Teaching/Learning Innovation (CTLI) are ready to assist you in transitioning to Canvas, and 24/7 help from Canvas is available to answer your questions. Make an appointment or stop by your campus CTLI for one-on-one support. To access Canvas help, go to the Canvas login site and select Help in the bottom of the login box. This link will provide options for an online chat with Canvas experts, telephone support and the ability to create a support ticket.

Please check back next month for the next five things you need to know about Canvas.
