A Message from Kathleen Plinske, President, Osceola, Lake Nona and Poinciana Campuses
In an effort to learn more about new learning support strategies and assess the strategies currently being used at Valencia, several members of the learning support team from the Osceola, Lake Nona and Poinciana Campuses attended the 43rd annual Association of Colleges for Tutoring & Learning Assistance (ACTLA) Conference held in Sacramento, California. Topics discussed within the conference included tutor training, assessing program effectiveness, asynchronous versus synchronous tutoring, increasing success with limited resources, embedded tutoring and supplemental instruction.
With this information, the team aims to provide additional information to the Campus Plan Objective 1.4 team to help evaluate the effectiveness of learning support strategies and expand those that most effectively support student success.
In addition to attending the sessions, Kevin and Michael presented a session titled “Breaking into the Classroom: Mobile Writing Center Strategies for Increasing Student Usage on Smaller Campuses.” This session focused on how the Lake Nona Campus Writing Center uses a systematic approach to increase usage through introductory classroom visits, themed workshops and a Rent-A-Tutor program.
