National Nutrition Month Celebrated With Virtual Tours

Professor of Nutrition April Engel organized two virtual presentations to celebrate National Nutrition Month with World Strides, the Study Abroad and Global Experience office and Student Development, including virtual tours to the Jose Maria de Fonseca Winery in Portugal and the La Fattoria Conzano e Paterno Estate, an olive oil production farm in Italy.

On Thursday, March 18, 2021, World Strides, an educational travel partner of Valencia, introduced attendees to the Jose Maria de Fonseca Winery in Portugal, located south of Lisbon. Antonio Suarez Franco, vice president of the winery, shared that he is the seventh generation of family members who own and run the winery and that the company is 100% family owned. The winery is one of the top Portugal wine producers and exporters in the world and sells a large portfolio of wines (including alcohol free wine) to 70 countries.

Antonio took the viewers on a virtual tour of his wine company and explained the importance of history and traditions within a company. Their company slogan is “Family of Wines. Wines of a Family.”

One week later, on Thursday, March 25, 2021, World Strides to provide a virtual tour of the La Fattoria Conzano e Paterno Estate, an olive oil production farm in Italy, southwest of Florence. Founded by the Swiss architect Wendell Gelpke, it is now owned by his heirs, the Gelpke and Goldschmidt families. The farm extends more than 500 acres, enabling the production of wine, sheep cheeses and high-quality olive oil. In addition to being a working farm, the estate also has guest quarters available to rent.

Arianna Gelpke, who runs the wine cellar, and her sister, Aljoscha Gelpke, manager of the estate, walked the estate and shared interesting facts:

  • “Extra Virgin” on olive oil means absolutely nothing about oil quality. It is based on how many defects there are with the olives but does not affect nutrition or quality; there is little control over the extra virgin determination.
  • One olive tree produces one liter of olive oil.
  • A good olive oil should not leave your mouth greasy.
  • Olives are picked in November and pressed as soon as possible to prevent loss of nutrients and antioxidants.
  • Their estate also produces 14 distinct types of cheese, and all their cheeses are made from sheep milk.
  • The longer the cheese is aged, the more digestible it is and better tolerated by people who are lactose intolerant.
  • The COVID pandemic has not affected production of the wine, cheese or olives, but cheese sales are down due to restaurants being closed. Wine sales are up due to people being home and drinking more. Their wine and olive oil are imported to the United States.

The sisters also toured the winery and cheese store. Throughout the tour, they discussed the Mediterranean diet, food and culture.
