OIT Improves User Experience Through Enhanced Internet Access and Wireless Networks
ShareA Message from John Slot, Vice President, Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO)
Technology is deeply integrated into every experience here at Valencia. Most of the learning, collaboration and business applications deployed by the College are hosted on our own network, not requiring access to the Internet. However, increased use of Internet-based applications had exceeded the limits of our Internet access capacity and resulted in degraded experiences during periods of high use.
As a result, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is improving our connection and access to applications, starting with a recent increase to our available Internet bandwidth and extending to dedicated wireless networks specifically configured to support three groups: Valencia’s students, employees and guests.
As a result, you will now find three wireless networks. See the table below for details:
As a Valencia employee, please utilize the new VC-Staff Wi-Fi, and please refer our students and guests to their respective networks. Employees and students will be required to enter their usernames and passwords, just like with our former Wi-Fi.
Guests will be prompted to submit an email address or phone number that can accept text messages. Valencia will then email or text guests a password to access the Wi-Fi. The password expires in 12 hours.
To continue to improve your connection and access to applications, OIT is also currently working on the following initiatives:
- An additional path to the Internet, further increasing access and quality of services during peak cycles, for example, during registration and exams;
- Collaboration with faculty currently using applications not managed by the College, such as Skype and Google Hangouts, to improve virtual engagement with Valencia students; and
- Collegewide assessment of our wireless coverage to improve connectivity in areas with high density, such as student labs and libraries.
If need assistance with WiFi or have any questions, please Contact the OIT help desk.
