Valencia College’s Total Rewards encompasses a myriad of offerings such as compensation, benefits, professional growth opportunities, motivating work environment, recognition and parenting leave. On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, the District Board of Trustees approved revisions to College Policy 6Hx28: Total Rewards: Parenting Leave to align it with current practices.
A high-level overview of the updates are as follows:
- The purpose of leave was clarified to include the recovery from the birth of a child and/or for activities related to the care and well-being of a newborn or adopted child under five years of age.
- Employees may use paid parenting leave for one event in a rolling 12-month period with the first day of paid parenting leave establishing the 12-month period.
- Definitions of eligible employee and parent were updated for better understanding and inclusiveness.
- Since employees have the option of using all or part of the paid parenting leave, language was added to clarify that upon an employee’s return to work following paid parenting leave, any unused paid parenting leave shall be forfeited by the employee and considered non-cumulative, non-compensable and non-transferable.
