A Message from Page Jerzak, Director, Online Teaching and Learning
As communicated in an announcement from John Slot, vice president, information technology and chief information officer, and Susan Ledlow, vice president, academic affairs and planning, on Friday, April 28, 2017, Valencia College will be moving from the Blackboard learning management system (LMS) to the Canvas LMS.
This transition, which will officially take place in the summer of May 2018, will help to ensure students enjoy a consistent learning experience in a reliable and effective system.
To enable a positive faculty experience during this transition, we will be testing and improving the system throughout the next year. A small pilot group, for example, has begun to learn and use Canvas as a part of Destination this summer. This group is helping to test the system, determine best practices for migration and provide feedback. For a list of faculty members testing the system in Destination, click here.
All faculty and staff will have access to Canvas later this summer, to provide ample opportunity for all faculty to learn Canvas and migrate their course content.
A collegewide Canvas Migration Advisory Team has also been established to further support a successful transition. This team will be advising on the creation of resources, development opportunities and communications, as well as helping to assess how well our migration goes over the next year.
Regular communications and updates about Canvas and this transition will be communicated via The Grove and employee newsletters like the Faculty Insight and The Juice. Then, to collect feedback, town hall meetings will be held later in the fall term for faculty and staff to have questions answered.
