Pursuing a Degree? Submit Your Plan of Study by Monday, October 31, 2016, to Earn Percentage Pay IncreaseShare

As you know, new Department of Labor (DOL) Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) regulations have driven the reform of Valencia’s practices and policies. Included in these changes is an adjustment of Valencia’s current degree recognition policy for staff, which will enable the College to recognize all employees for their academic achievements.
Going forward, the new policy, titled College Policy 6Hx28: 3C-04 Total Rewards: Recognition of Full-Time Employees for Educational Advancement, will provide a one-time monetary award and recognition for all full-time, non-instructional staff who earn advanced degrees from a regionally accredited institution. (Monetary award will only be applied to the first advanced degree of its type. For example, employees may not receive a monetary award for their second master’s degree.)
This new policy will replace the existing policy, 6Hx28:3C-04.3.2, Pay of Professional and Administrative Personnel Receiving Advanced College Credit, which provides a 5 or 7.5 percent pay increase to base pay for staff who successfully complete an advanced degree from a regionally accredited institution.
To receive compensatory benefits under the existing degree recognition policy (percentage increase to pay), administrative and professional employees who intend to enroll or are currently pursuing an advanced degree must:
- Have an approved plan of study in place as required by current policy by Monday, October 31, 2016.
- Submit or re-submit the proposed plan of study for advanced college credit or degree form to Organizational Development and Human Resources (ODHR) no later than Monday, October 31, 2016, even if the form has previously been submitted. (This will help to ensure all paperwork is properly processed, and eligible employees receive the appropriate compensation for their degree.)
- Have the degree conferred by Tuesday, December 31, 2019.
This deadline does not apply to full-time instructional employees pursuing their advanced college credit or degree, and it is not related to the College’s professional development courses. No changes have been made to these programs. The existing procedure for instructional employees will remain the same in the new policy.
