QEP Kicks Off With College-Wide Meeting
ShareOn Friday, September 7, employees gathered at the East Campus Performing Arts Center to kick off the formal process to develop Valencia’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).
The QEP is a long-term, college-wide project focused on improvement, enrichment and enhancement of the student learning experience, and a major part of our reaffirmation process through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a regional accreditation agency for an eleven-state region.

In a discussion led by Kurt Ewen, assistant vice president for assessment and institutional effectiveness, the audience learned how our QEP is related to student learning.
Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, delivered the keynote presentation and shared his thoughts on how Valencia can contribute to, and learn from, the national discussion on community college excellence and student completion.
Dr. Shugart, president of Valencia College, followed with a discussion on the connection between the QEP and the Big Ideas that have inspired innovation at Valencia for years.
Attendees were then invited to sign up to join a conversation on one of four topic areas listed below. All employees are invited to join these conversations. - Student Purpose
Emerging idea – Students with some sense of their purpose in life and in college are more likely to be engaged, to learn and to succeed in college. - Student Learning
Emerging idea – More than any other time in history, student learning can happen anywhere and at any time. Changes in the conditions for student learning require that we think differently about how we engage students in the learning process. - Students Need Navigation
Emerging idea – To be successful, Valencia students not only need an educational plan, but they also need clear and specific directions for navigating the demands of college.
The New Student Experience
Emerging idea – To support learning, students need a holistic first year experience that is academically and socially engaging while providing connection and direction.
