Salary Information on 2015 – 2016 Employment Contracts Explained

Recently, you should have received your contract of employment for the 2015 – 2016 fiscal year. As you are aware, we have changed some of the processes related to establishing salaries. For example, the annual salary increase is effective on August 2 this year instead of July 1, as it has been in past years.

We have received several questions about the salary figure on the contract and wanted to ensure that everyone was aware of the process.

The District Board of Trustees approved employee reappointments and annual salary increases at their meeting on June 24.  The reappointments were effective on July 1, based on the fiscal year, which runs from July 1 through June 30, but the salary increase is not effective until August 2. As a result, we issued contracts with the salary that was in effect on July 1.

To accommodate a change in salary during the contract period, we added some language to the contract. In previous years, the contract stated that the College would pay the employee for services rendered at a base salary of $xxxx.

This year we added the phase “at least” before the salary figure. We also updated the last sentence of the first paragraph to read, “This salary amount, or such greater amount as may be determined by the College, is the gross salary for the indicated period” to solidify that the salary may increase but would not be less than the amount indicated on the contract.

We believe these changes allow a certain degree of flexibility related to salary increases that are effective after the beginning of the fiscal year without requiring a new contract and ensure that our contracts are legally compliant for the entire fiscal year.

While your contract reflects the salary that was in effect on July 1, I want to assure you that you will be getting a raise as approved by the District Board of Trustees and that the raise will be reflected in your paycheck starting in August.
