The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that individuals who feel sick should stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Many of our colleagues either do not accrue paid sick leave or, for various reasons, are unable to maintain a sick leave balance that would allow them to be out of work due to COVID-19. Without paid leave, however, individuals are faced with difficult choices about maintaining income or staying home to prevent the spread of the virus.
In light of that, and for a very limited time, Valencia College will offer temporary emergency leave with pay for all employees who need to be absent from work due to diagnosis of COVID-19 or displaying COVID-19-like symptoms in themselves or a member of their immediate household.
For full-time employees, temporary emergency leave with pay due to COVID-19 of up to 10 consecutive work days may be available if all other accrued leave has been exhausted. For members of the sick leave pool, this temporary emergency leave with pay would be exhausted before sick leave pool would be used.
For part-time employees, temporary emergency leave with pay due to COVID-19 of up to 60 hours over two consecutive weeks (not to exceed regularly scheduled hours) may be available. Part-time faculty who receive paid time off will be required to use that leave first before requesting temporary emergency leave with pay due to COVID-19.
Temporary emergency leave with pay due to COVID-19 will be available once Valencia’s physical campuses and locations reopen for employees and will remain available until further notice. Temporary emergency leave with pay due to COVID-19 may only be authorized by the vice president, organizational development and human resources and is available one time to each eligible employee. If you seek temporary emergency leave with pay due to COVID-19, you may be asked to provide documentation to support the request.
