The Valencia EDGE, Part IV: Educational Opportunities at Your Fingertips

Are you spending your SPD (Staff and Program Development) or department funds on SkillPath, New Horizons or another training vendor’s professional development opportunities? Although these companies provide excellent options to develop our employees, you may be able to access some of the same courses FOR FREE through the Valencia EDGE. So, be sure to check the Valencia EDGE first before paying for outside training.

The fourth and final article in our series on how to utilize the Valencia EDGE highlights the professional development opportunities available to you at no cost.

Of course, the Valencia EDGE offers you access to in-person workshops that are held on our campuses. You can view the schedule of available workshops in the employee development email that is delivered the first week of every month, by going to the Grove Professional Development post, or by downloading the schedule on the My Development Channel in Atlas. Courses such as Banner Finance, Travel 101 and Working with Conflict are regularly offered.

In addition to the in-person workshop offerings, did you know that as a Valencia employee, you also have access to hundreds of online courses as well? Yes, free online courses are offered on virtually all Microsoft products, including Microsoft Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Visio and Project to name a few. Adobe products can be found in the EDGE as well, including Acrobat, Captivate, InDesign and Reader.

Do you perform a lot of heavy lifting, maintain a CPR certification, or drive frequently as a part of your job? If so, check out an online class on Back Safety and Injury Prevention. Or take advantage of courses on first aid and defensive driving. Don’t delay. Register for free training today through the Valencia EDGE.edge-browse-juice-270w

For workshop descriptions and to register:

  • Log in to Atlas.
  • Click on the Employees tab.
  • Click on the Access the EDGE graphic in the My Development Channel. A new window will open.
  • On the right-hand side, review the subjects in Browse for Training.
  • Scroll through the course options, or select a new subject in the left-hand column.

As an added benefit, after you complete any in-person or online course in the Valencia EDGE, it appears automatically on your transcript, so you and your supervisor can reference for your Check-In. In addition, if you have completed external training or attended a conference, you can add these to your transcript as well.
