Valencia was well represented at the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) 65th Annual Convention held at the Hilton Sandestin in Destin, October 29 – 31, 2014.
Linda Herlocker, dean of students, West Campus, presented “Re-engineering the Front Door,” which focused on the change management techniques relevant to student affairs process flow. Valencia’s implementation of an integrated student service model continues to evolve. Through a data-informed process, the way students are served was changed so that there are no long standing lines and “bouncing” of students is minimized.
Both Neal Phillips, professor of English, and Tanya Bizon, professor of ESL, presented as finalists for the AFC Technology Commission’s Excellence in Technology awards. Neal’s presentation, “Virtual Groups: Working Together without Actually Meeting!” took first place and Tanya’s presentation “Teaching in Different Worlds with Greenscreen” took second place.
Josh Murdock, instructional designer, presented, as part of the AFC Technology Commission, on “Amazing Tools to Add to Your EdTech Utility Belt.” Murdock showcased 12 tools to supercharge your classroom and training to engage, excite and educate students. Josh will be taking over as the commission chair for the AFC Technology Commission for the next two years and serving on the AFC Board of Directors.
Each of the presentations will be featured in webinars with the AFC Technology Commission in the coming months.
Special thanks to all colleagues who purchased AFC fall drawing tickets, which helped to raise nearly $300 for AFC member travel scholarships. The winner of the drawing was Deanne Abrams, assistant director, student development, East Campus.
Next year’s AFC convention will be held in Lake Buena Vista. AFC members are encouraged to attend the 2015 conference.
