A Message from Wendy Givoglu, Interim President, East and Winter Park Campuses

After a COVID hiatus, the 19th annual Valencia Summer Dance Institute (VSDI) four-week program began on Monday, June 21, 2021, and concluded on Thursday, July 15, 2021. This program provided quality dance instruction for rising ninth through 12th-grade students.

Dancers were instructed on the development of dance, cooperative learning and communication skills, as well as working with various artists in the fields of dance. They had the opportunity to demonstrate skills acquired in these areas.

This program utilized all aspects of a dance performance: classroom instruction in various dance techniques, instruction in classroom and rehearsal etiquette as well as costuming and the culmination of a jointly produced (dancers and instructors) virtual dance concert at the end of the student’s four-week tenure.

Valencia students who are working on their associate degree in the dance performance degree pathway also provided teaching, choreography and information regarding developing resumes.

“We had the privilege of hosting 15 students, and they were a joy to work with and were so kind,” shared Megan Bannantyne, president of Art in Motion, a Valencia College dance major club. “It was so nice to have new people in our space and to make new friends. Altogether, it was such an amazing experience after so much time being apart.”

Filming the performance took place the last week of classes, and the Valencia Dance Summer reparatory concert showcased the work of the high school students who participated in the Valencia Summer Dance Institute, as well as Valencia College dance majors.

“We are grateful to our collegewide and campus administration who allowed us to continue this time-honored tradition,” Professor of Dance Suzanne Salapa said. “We love our VSDI beautiful dancers, and they were wonderful spirits, compliant with COVID protocols.”
