West Campus Showcase – August 2016

West Campus Showcase — August 2016; Haiku by Angela Blewitt

By Angela Blewitt, Professor, English

angela-blewitt-205wGrowing up spending summers with my grandparents in Colorado, I began writing poetry where the mountain landscape was my muse. In graduate school, I won a poetry contest for San Luis Obispo County, and my mother asked me, “What did you win — $10,000?” I won a reading. (One does not do poetry to become a millionaire.) Fifty people came to the reading, including the poet laureate of London. Those were exciting times.

This summer, I took Professor of English Diane Orsini’s creative writing class and branched out into fiction writing, including taking up poetry again after a long hiatus. (Orsini is an amazing professor, and I cannot recommend her highly enough.) She suggested that I submit a couple haiku poems to the Campus Concentrate, and here we are. I really love teaching here at Valencia and working with truly wonderful colleagues and students.

As a professor of English on West Campus, I have a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology, a Master’s of Arts in English and a Doctor of Education in educational psychology. Before coming to Valencia in 2014, I taught English in South Korea and at EARTH University in Costa Rica, as well as 11 years of high school English in East Los Angeles and two years of freshman composition at California Polytechnic State University.
